Counseling is a tool which helps many people of all ages achieve a better quality of life. Most people come for service because they are in pain. Many come because they want to enjoy life more fully. The counselor is a trained professional who provides guidance, but the solutions must come from within the client if they are to provide lifelong benefits. Effective counseling is based on forming a strong theraputic relationship in which the client is able to examine areas of his or her life which are painful. In most cases the client and counselor will meet weekly for 45 to 50 minute sessions. At times they may meet more frequently.
There are many different approaches which a counselor may use. Peggy Tana uses an eclectic style which combines elements of several approaches. She is person-centered which means that she is guided by what the client introduces in each session. She also uses cognitive behavioral techniques such as challenging negative beliefs about oneself and encouraging behavioral changes to develope new strengths and skills. She is trained in EMDR, a technique which helps people process traumatic memories and deep emotional pain. She is also a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor and works with people with many forms of addictive behavior as well as substance use issues.
Sometimes a person experiences symptoms which may be helped by medications. In such cases Peggy will discuss this with the client. Together they will explore the possibility of using medications. They will also discuss whether to go to the client's primary care physician or to a psychiatrist.
